Happy New Year!

After a chilled-out few weeks it was time for the last big night of the festive season. Soon we’d be going back to the daily grind so it was time to celebrate the great year that was 2006 and welcome in 2007.

What to do on New Year’s Eve is always a bit problematic – most venues are overpriced and overcrowded and over here at least it’s usually pretty damned cold outside. In the end we decided to brave the chilly winter night and head in to the city for the official London fireworks.

Things kicked off as they usually do with a few drinks at home with the house mates. Oli jokingly requested that Sarah make him "Sex on the Beach" and was quite surprised when she knocked one up then and there! The only condition was that he take it with an Aussie flag garnish, (he’s the only English guy in the house). But the drink was so good he didn’t mind too much.

We set off Bryce’s second box of fireworks in the back yard and then got ready to head out. We’d sussed out vantage points along the Thames and thought we had a pretty good idea of where we wanted to end up. Bryce was keen to come in and see NYE London-style so we filled a bag with beers and took the tube in to town.

Unfortunately just about every single person in the greater London area seemed to have had the same idea and by the time we got off there was a queue just to get out of the station! A one-way system had been set up sending hundreds of thousands of people winding their way up to Fleet Street and then back down to the river bank.

Time was running out for us to get down by the river before the stroke of midnight. The one-way route eventually came to a standstill so we broke from the crowd and headed further east, eventually ending up near Temple. Once we got down to the river side things weren’t quite so crazy and so we found ourselves a nice vantage point just in time for the fireworks to start.

That photo’s not too brilliant but the fireworks were quite impressive. They were fired off the London Eye and were a lot better than when we came in to town for NYE back in 2003. They’re still not a patch on Sydney’s fireworks fired off the harbour bridge of course. Afterwards we finally found some toilets and then hung around for a while enjoying the atmosphere and the rest of our beer.

Having waited around for a while so that the tube wasn’t so crowded we journeyed home, having fun as we chatted with our fellow revelers. When we got back we stayed up drinking with Oli and his mates. At some stage we ended up in the back yard doing cartwheels for some reason.

When we finally went to bed 2007 was already quite a few hours old. It’d been a fun year so far – here’s hoping that’s a good sign for the rest of it!
