Slovenia & Croatia

After a week of "heavy metal holidays" at Metal Camp, we drove just outside the town of Tolmin to see the Tolminka gorge, part of theTrigalv national park. We’d been told be a few different people at Metal Camp that it was worth a visit and we certainly weren’t disappointed.
The water running down from the gorge was crystal clear and icy cold – very refreshing, especially as we were in the middle of an European heat wave. We took some time to cool off before moving on…
There were a few precarious bridges to be crossed…

…but we braved them and wandered the forest path taking in the scenery. The water tumbling down through the gorge was particularly impressive.

After hiking up the mountain we ended up at Dante’s Cave. Cool air from the depths of the cave was flowing up and out of the entrance, so we took refuge from the heat in the cave mouth.

After walking back down to the car, we left in the direction of Hungary. However after a wrong turn we found ourselves crossing the border into Croatia by mistake! We thought we’d take advantage of the situation by stopping along the way to see some old buildings and have lunch and the first part of our plan went well…

…however going to buy lunch we realised that Croatia are yet to start using the Euro and as such we didn’t have any currency. We searched for a place that would let us pay with a credit card before a bloke in a bar who didn’t speak any English walked us to a tiny restaurant that had card facilities.
We enjoyed a huge lunch that was hearty, delicious and ridiculously cheap before resuming our journey to Hungary. A couple more pics of Slovenia and Croatia are here.
