Slovenia and a Rainy Metal Camp 2009

IMG_5580.JPG After moving reasonably briskly through the first leg of our journey via France, Italy and Croatia/Bosnia we made it to Slovenia just in time for the start of Metal Camp 2009. We’d already been lucky enough to see some of Slovenia’s abundant natural beauty on previous trips, but we were yet to visit one of the nation’s crown jewels, the Postojnska cave. Read more…

Croatia and Bosnia & Herzegovina

IMG_5386.JPG After a night wrapped up in jackets and sleeping bags to offset the cold of the overly air-conditioned cabin, we awoke as our ferry approached the port of Dubrovnik on a perfect Summer’s morning.

With only a few days before we needed to be in Slovenia for Metal Camp, our time was becoming somewhat limited. So we opted to take a 90 minute walking tour of Dubrovnik’s stunningly beautiful and well-preserved old town, formerly the Republic of Ragusa and whose origin is still under debate. Read more…

Italy: Cinque Terre to Bari

IMG_5269.JPGMaybe it’s due to Sarah’s Triestino heritage that we’ve always loved visiting Italy, even (or especially??) with its run-down appearance and total lack of any decent organisation. Hey, if it kind of works why change things, right? Have a pizza (probably preceded and followed by several other tasty courses), enjoy a few glasses of wine or a rich espresso and think about it some other time right?!….Haha! Read more…

First stop: Hellfest and France

IMG_4986.JPGWith so much to do before embarking on our journey, our last few weeks in London went by incredibly quickly.

Before we knew it the whirlwind of house clearing, leaving parties, box packing, and general loose end tying was over. It was time to go. Read more…

Wacken Open Air 2008

Once more it was time for the biggest event on the heavy metal calender – Wacken Open Air!

Every year, the sleepy town of Wacken in the north of Germany becomes temporary home to tens of thousands of metalheads who travel from the four corners of the globe for a few glorious days of German beer, sunshine (hopefully) and of course, heavy metal. Read more…

Jeff Martin – LOGO, Hamburg

With our annual pilgrimage to the north of Germany for the Wacken Open Air festival almost upon us, we couldn’t believe our luck to discover that Jeff Martin would be playing a gig in Hamburg the very night before!

Jeff’s solo gigs in county Cork last year were fantastic and with Hamburg only an hour’s train ride from Wacken the timing was perfect – we weren’t gonna miss this one! Read more…

The Melloboat – Stockholm to Helsinki & Back Again

To celebrate the 21st anniversary of Swedish prog record label Mellotronen Records, owner Stefan organised a gig that we knew we couldn’t miss. Dubbed the "Melloboat", it was to be a festival of prog rock and metal aboard a 2-day cruise, from Stockholm to Helsinki and back again.

Katatonia were on the bill, as were Opeth who would be playing their first gig with their new, revamped lineup. Other prog bands of interest were Anekdoten and Leafhound, however the biggest surprise of the lineup was the inclusion of cult British folk/prog group Comus, who last played together way back in 1973! 2nd Anniversary in Tenerife

So, what to do for our 2nd wedding anniversary as the cold, dark winter begins to set in across London? Why, bugger off to the warmer climes of the Canary Islands of course!

We took the early-morning flight south via Madrid and went on to spend a lovely 4-day weekend on the island of Tenerife enjoying the sunshine and generally lazing about not doing very much. Read more…

Metal Female Voices Festival 2007

When we heard that Leaves’ Eyes would be filming their performance at the annual Metal Female Voices Festival for a forthcoming DVD we knew there was no missing the gig. So after a 4am start we drove down to Dover and onto the futuristic Channel Tunnel train. Half an hour later we rolled off the Chunnel in France, bound for the Oktoberhallen in Wieze, Belgium.
