With our big European road trip looming closer, it was finally time for Sarah to say farewell to her job at 3 Valleys Water. She received some very thoughtful going away presents and going out in true Aussie style she organised a good old-fashioned sausage sizzle for the entire accounts department down at the local pub. Have a look at some of the pictures here.

Leaves’ Eyes have been a favourite band of both Sarah and I for some time. We first saw them play at the Summer Breeze festival in Germany back in 2005, not long after their first album came out and we’ve been big fans ever since.
We’ve seen them play here in the UK a few times and every gig has been absolutely brilliant. Last night they were back in London and played probably the best show that we’ve seen yet to a sizeable crowd in Dingwall’s, Camden. Read more…

The whole of London had been bracing for some heavy snow overnight and we certainly weren’t disappointed. When we woke there were already 4 inches on the ground and it was still falling steadily.
Of course this meant that public transport was in disarray and getting to work was nigh on impossible. So after an impromptu snowball fight in the back yard we donned our snow gear, grabbed the sleds and trudged up to the local park. You can see some photos of us playing in the snow here.

Last November we went along to watch the friendly match between the Socceroos and fellow World Cup underdogs Ghana. That game ended in a 1-all draw and so we returned to Loftus Road hoping for a better result against our next opponent, Denmark. The news in the lead-up to the game didn’t bode well for our boys – with several key players out injured or with wives/girlfriends due to give birth, it was going to be an uphill struggle against the highly-rated Danes. Spamalot, Eric Idle’s musical based on the ever popular "Monty Python and the Holy Grail" has been receiving rave reviews ever since it opened in the West End. We’d promised to take housemate Kris to see the show as a Christmas present. Her time in the UK was fast running out, so we finally organised a night to go along and it turned out everybody else in the house was keen as well! Read more…

After a chilled-out few weeks it was time for the last big night of the festive season. Soon we’d be going back to the daily grind so it was time to celebrate the great year that was 2006 and welcome in 2007.
What to do on New Year’s Eve is always a bit problematic – most venues are overpriced and overcrowded and over here at least it’s usually pretty damned cold outside. In the end we decided to brave the chilly winter night and head in to the city for the official London fireworks. Read more…

You’ve hopefully all heard of the Wii by now. Nintendo’s new console uses funky motion-sensing controllers for a new take on the whole gaming experience. Kevin, a workmate and Nintendo fanboy had his Wii on pre-order since September to ensure he wasn’t one of the unlucky ones who missed out in the xmas rush.
The new projector had been a great success so far and so a few days after Chritsmas, Kevin brought his Wii over for some big-screen gaming. Needless to say we had loads of food and grog, (Belgian beer, mulled wine, sangria and egg-nog… mmm…) and a good time was had by all. Have a look at some of the photos here.

Christmas time in London! The 2006 festive season brought us the usual mix of gargantuan quantities of food, a copious supply of drink and plenty of fun, laughs and laziness.
After Christmas parties and the December work wind-down, Bryce and ourselves celebrated Christmas Eve with a cheese and wine evening. To the cheese, salami and countless bottles of European wine we’d picked up on our trip to Belgium we added a number of British cheeses and other tasty snacks, resulting in a handsome spread. Put on some good tunes and settled in for the evening.

Well our first year of being married has been an amazing one and so we thought we’d do something amazing to celebrate. And what better way to celebrate a first anniversary than at The Fat Duck, voted The Best Restaurant in the World in 2005? Proprietor Heston Blumenthal made his restaurant in the tiny village of Bray a huge success by being a pioneer of "molecular gastronomy", the application of scientific methods to food preparation. The results are such bizarre combinations as snail porridge, sardine on toast sorbet and egg and bacon ice cream.
We stayed in the nearby Monkey Island Hotel, perched on a small island in the middle of the river Thames and apparently named after a monk that once lived there. After a relaxed afternoon we wandered up into the village and enjoyed a drink at The Hind’s Head, also owned by Heston Blumenthal and famous for it’s pub meals, (we’ll have to wait until next time to give them a try).
