Slovenia and a Rainy Metal Camp 2009

After moving reasonably briskly through the first leg of our journey via France, Italy and Croatia/Bosnia we made it to Slovenia just in time for the start of Metal Camp 2009. We’d already been lucky enough to see some of Slovenia’s abundant natural beauty on previous trips, but we were yet to visit one [...]

Croatia and Bosnia & Herzegovina

After a night wrapped up in jackets and sleeping bags to offset the cold of the overly air-conditioned cabin, we awoke as our ferry approached the port of Dubrovnik on a perfect Summer’s morning.
With only a few days before we needed to be in Slovenia for Metal Camp, our time was becoming somewhat limited. [...]

Italy: Cinque Terre to Bari

Maybe it’s due to Sarah’s Triestino heritage that we’ve always loved visiting Italy, even (or especially??) with its run-down appearance and total lack of any decent organisation. Hey, if it kind of works why change things, right? Have a pizza (probably preceded and followed by several other tasty courses), enjoy a few glasses of wine [...]

First stop: Hellfest and France

With so much to do before embarking on our journey, our last few weeks in London went by incredibly quickly.
Before we knew it the whirlwind of house clearing, leaving parties, box packing, and general loose end tying was over. It was time to go.
We hurriedly packed the last of our belongings into the Sunny, newly [...]

Farewell England, Hello World…

So after 5 1/2 years in London we’ve quit our jobs, packed up our stuff, said goodbye to our beloved home in Prout Grove and are entering a new chapter in this our amorphic destiny…Yep, we’re finally heading home to our native Australia but of course we won’t be going home the easy way.
Wacken Open Air 2008

Once more it was time for the biggest event on the heavy metal calender – Wacken Open Air!
Every year, the sleepy town of Wacken in the north of Germany becomes temporary home to tens of thousands of metalheads who travel from the four corners of the globe for a few glorious days of German beer, [...]

Jeff Martin – LOGO, Hamburg

With our annual pilgrimage to the north of Germany for the Wacken Open Air festival almost upon us, we couldn’t believe our luck to discover that Jeff Martin would be playing a gig in Hamburg the very night before!
Jeff’s solo gigs in county Cork last year were fantastic and with Hamburg only an hour’s train [...]

May Day Long Weekend – Eurovision, Monaco and Rock Band!

The May Day long weekend lay ahead of us. Kevin’s copy of Rock Band for Xbox had arrived complete with guitar, mic and drum kit (!), the final of the Eurovision song contest was on Saturday, the Monaco GP1 was on Sunday, and we were very well stocked with beer, meat and BBQ coals. Game [...]

Sarah’s 30th – Beers by the Thames & Dinner @ Belgos

With a trip to Iceland planned for the weekend of Sarah’s 30th, we got everybody together on the previous Saturday for a birthday celebration.
After a lunchtime cocktail or two at home, we made our way into town for the business end of proceedings.

We spent the afternoon in The Samuel Pepys, a very nice bar [...]

The Melloboat – Stockholm to Helsinki & Back Again

To celebrate the 21st anniversary of Swedish prog record label Mellotronen Records, owner Stefan organised a gig that we knew we couldn’t miss. Dubbed the "Melloboat", it was to be a festival of prog rock and metal aboard a 2-day cruise, from Stockholm to Helsinki and back again.
Katatonia were on the bill, as were Opeth [...]
